2011 Car Specification Rules

ATTENTION: It will be the sole responsibility of each driver to insure compliance with all Brazos Mini Sprint Association rules, regarding engines, chassis, safety equipment, etc.

Safety Rules and Regulations

1.       Nomex or PBI type fire suits are mandatory, as well as, Nomex or PBI type gloves, racing shoes, neck braces, and arm restraints. Arm restraints shall be adjusted to keep driver's hands below the top of the roll cage. All equipment MUST be worn whenever the car is on the track under race green or yellow flag conditions.

2.       All helmets must be S/A 2000 rated or newer. If the helmet does not have a Nomex or PBI type lining, then a Nomex or PBI type sock must be worn. Helmets must be full face with an unbreakable shield. No class M series helmets allowed.

3.       Safety belts must be 5 point harness with metal latches only. Seat belts must be securely attached to the chassis, no more than 3 years old, and used at all times.

4.       It is mandatory to install a cross brace behind the seat, at the shoulder height, to support the shoulder harness.

5.       All cars must have 2 fuel valves, a manual shut-off and a rollover valve.

6.       Head rest or Head net is mandatory on the right side. 

7.       Chain guards will be installed on all cars where chains are exposed to the driver and/or other participants. The chain guard, using a minimum of .090" aluminum material or equivalent, will run on top of the chain from the front of the drivers opening to extend at least to the rear of the drivers seat. The guard must be installed in such a manner that the driver cannot touch the chain and/or sprockets while sitting in the cockpit.

8.       Any car equipped with a shifting mechanism should have this device mounted in the driver's compartment unless shielded for driver protection. Shift levers may be mounted outside the driver's compartment on the opposite side of the car from the chain drive (unless the car has an inboard chain). All mechanically operated devices must be mounted below the driver's shoulders.

9.       All wet cell batteries mounted in the cockpit must be covered and vented outside the cockpit area.

10.   Any car may be disqualified for any infractions of safety regulations and specifications.

11.   No two-way radio communication is allowed in the car or on the driver.

12.   Use of in car video cameras is allowed.


2011 "A" Class Rules

Chassis and Motor Specifications

Engines and Fuel Rules

1.       Engine 600cc 4 cylinder 4 stroke as comes on a stock production bike for public sale in the U.S.A. No current year production engines.

2.       Except as noted, all internal and external engine parts must remain stock with no modifications, metal removal, blueprinting, including stock working charging system.

3.       Valve seat inserts may be reworked. Valve springs may be shimmed with standard or aftermarket shims.

4.       Cylinder head combustion chambers may be cleaned by bead blasting with valves seated in place.

5.       Cylinder head gaskets may be replaced only with original equipment manufacturer’s stock parts (All 3 layers of the head gasket must be used). All other gaskets may be replaced with duplicate aftermarket parts.

6.       Light cleaning of gasket surfaces with steel wool, Scotch-Brite, etc. is allowed.

7.       Transmission gears may be shimmed only for the purpose of proper engagement. Standard or aftermarket shims may be utilized.

8.       Aftermarket cam chain tensioner allowed for safety of motor.

9.       Fuel injection engines may run carburetors. Injected with power commander allowed gas or alcohol. No timing modules allowed. Fuel injection engines running carburetors may change all fuel metering devices to tune fuel curve, Billet intake boots allowed.

10.   Modification of oil pan & pick up allow allowed or aftermarket ok.

11.   Modification to thermostat cover allowed or aftermarket ok.

12.   Modification to water pump cover allowed or aftermarket ok.

13.   Any air box, stock appearing CDI, aftermarket washable replacement air filter, power commander on fuel injection models only.

14.   Any 600cc OEM CV carburetors (no flat slides allowed).

15.   Fuel cell securely mounted. Tank used for qualifying heats must remain for all events.

16.   No flammable liquids allowed in cooling systems.

17.   No cockpit adjustments of any kind.

18.   Weight Rule: 750 lbs., including driver, at the conclusion of the race. Loss of any bolt-on weight during competition will disqualify the individual from that event.

19.   Use up to 12 foot square wing with max of 52 inch sideboards. Nose wing must be a maximum of 18” x 24” center.

20.   All cars must have legible numbers in color contrasting to the background on both sides of the top wing, rear tail piece, and on the nose wing. Minimum height of the numbers on the nose is 8".  Minimum height on the tails and wings are 10". Car numbers are to be separated from advertising so that they will stand out and are readable.

Chassis Specs

1.       Any micro sprint chassis is allowed, but it must pass any test prescribed by the safety inspectors. The roll cage must be of a four-post design. No elliptical (oval shaped) tubing used on or as part of the main frame structure. Minimum wheel-base of 50 inches, maximum wheel-base of 70 inches.

2.       All cars must be equipped with either a tail tank & bladder OR with a safety cell. Fuel cell securely mounted. Tank used for qualifying heats must remain for all events.

3.       Bumpers and nerf bars are mandatory and must be securely mounted. No aluminum frames, rear bumpers or nerf bars. Aluminum front bumpers are allowed. Nerf bars must not be outside of tires.

4.       Steel, aluminum or titanium brake rotors only.

5.       No hollow, tubular or drilled out bolts allowed.

6.       Any cars with a frame that does not enclose the front axle must have the front axle tethered with “seat belt” material that is securely attached.

7.       The right side opening of body must be a minimum of 10 inches vertical at any point.

Tires and Wheels

1.       Right Rear Hoosier Racing Tire, stamped ASCS2 (or D35 or equivalent) tire must test with a durometor 50.

2.       Beadlocks recommended on all wheels.

 


2011 Sportsmen Class Rules

Engine Rules

1.       4 cycle multi-cylinder engines not exceeding 600cc with stock bore & stroke with charging unit intact and working.

2.       No porting or polishing of heads or cam degreeing. Valve jobs will be allowed as long as they are within mfg. tolerance allowance. Any air cleaner will be allowed. Any exhaust will be allowed. Crank case ventilation to atmospheric pressure only is allowed. All cars must start the race with a muffler.

3.       Carburetors must be OEM Production Motorcycle, Cv Style. No Flat sides or Lectron style carburetors allowed.

4.       Carburetors may have metering rods, jets and springs changed to tune fuel curve to match the car requirements.

5.       There will be no cones in the carburetor or the carburetor boots. TPS sensors not required.

6.       Aftermarket timing advancers are not allowed. Predrilled, slotted or altered cam gears and/or bolts, or keys are illegal.

7.       Original flywheel must remain in the motor (no lightening of flywheel). All original transmission gears must remain intact and functional. Any motor sprocket (520 or 530) is allowed. Outer cosmetic changes will be allowed to mount the motor in the car (i.e. cut part of the engine off to get it to fit, relocate oil pan drain plug, etc). Except as noted above, no internal metal removal or blueprinting allowed. (E.g. no head milling, porting, polishing or balancing allowed.) Aftermarket cam chain tensioners are allowed.

8.       Fuel Injected Engines running Fuel Injection

A.      Aftermarket air boxes are allowed.  Must run stock number of injectors. 

B.      Oil pickup modifications are allowed. 

C.      Outer cosmetic changes to mount the motor in the car are allowed, (i.e. cut part of the engine off to get it to fit, relocate oil pan drain plug, etc).

D.      Engines running Fuel Injection may run alcohol or gasoline (alcohol recommended). 

E.       Power commander module allowed to tune fuel map only. 

F.       No modules that allow ignition remapping.

G.     No MSD-MOTEC-TEC 3 or any other aftermarket ignitions allowed. Must use stock CDI box. No hot boxes are allowed in this class.

H.      No performance enhancing additives are allowed! However, top lube is allowed.

9.       Fuel Injected Engines running Carburetors
Engines originally equipped with fuel injection (except current year production) are allowed with any OEM production Motorcycle, CV style carburetors and aftermarket filter boxes. Interchanging of Injected and Carbureted cylinder head is allowed. Ignition specs are same as above.

10.   Transmission
Stock with all original ratio gears: No Lightening.  Must have stock clutch.

11.   Fuel

A.      “Stock” class cars may run gasoline, ethanol or methanol.

B.      No performance enhancing additives are allowed! However, top lube is allowed.

12.   ELECTRONIC
Micron data collectors allowed. No traction control or wheel sensors allowed.

13.   O.E.M. charging system must remain in the motor and be functional (charging while motor is running!).

14.   All cars must be equipped with cockpit operated electrical starter and an on-board battery capable of starting a 600cc multi-cylinder engine. On and off switch must be on the dash, top of cowl, or on the steering wheel. Switch must be connected and functional.

15.   Cars must have an operational manual lever clutch.

16.   The car must remain chain driven off original counter shaft.

17.   Wheelbase is from the center front axle to the center of the rear axle. With a maximum of 70" and a minimum of 50".

18.   The width is a maximum of 48" and a minimum of 32" from center of tires; 50" on 1/4 mile or larger tracks.

19.   Tires will be Hoosier or American Racer brand tires with a minimum durometer of 50 on the right rear. The right rear must have a compound no less than D35 for Hoosier and MD57 for American Racer.

20.   Wheels will not exceed 10" diameter or 14" in width. The only wheel allowed to be 14" is the right rear all other wheels must be 10" or less in width.  Wheels may be made of steel, carbon fiber, or aluminum.

21.   No cockpit adjustable devices for suspension or brakes. The use of manual or electric wing sliders is allowed.

22.   Minimum weight of car and driver will not be less than 780 lbs. Car weight will be determined, with driver, as the cars come off the track, the way they finished the race.

23.   Any material used for the purpose of adding to a car's total weight must be firmly attached as part of the car's structure. No liquid or lose ballast, i.e.:   water, fuel, oil, sand bags, rocks, and/or log chains etc., allowed. Any added weight shall be painted white.

24.   Cars must be equipped with a roll cage. The roll cage shall have gussets at the intersecting bars to the upright. Roll cage must be a minimum of 3" and a maximum of 6" above the driver’s helmet.

25.   Roll cages shall be at least:

A.      1 inch .095 wall thickness

B.      1 1/8 inch .065 wall thickness

C.      1 1/4 inch .065 wall thickness.

26.   Roll cages shall be made of chromoly steel or equivalent in strength with a 1/8" inspection hole drilled in it for the measurement of the material used. The front section of the cage must be no further back than the steering wheel. Roll cage must have sufficient fore and aft bracing. Bracing must have at least 3" radius. No square or pointed corners permitted.

27.   Fabrication of critical parts must be welded. Critical parts are identified as followed:

A.      Frame

B.      Running gear attached brackets

C.      Cowl frames

D.      Back rest and fuel tank mount

E.       Front axle

F.       Steering mechanism

G.     Engine and exhaust mounts

28.   Cars must have bumpers extending beyond the front and rear tires. Nothing may extend beyond a tangent line from the outside edge of the tires to the bumpers. Nothing may extend behind the outside edge of the tires or wheels, whichever is the widest point. No sharp corners or design so as to hook or damage.

29.   There will be no plastic mudguards, side panels, tops, or body encasements allowed.

30.   No rear view mirrors, nor any item positioned in such a way that it can be used as a rear viewing device.

31.   All cars must have complete bodies i.e.: hood, side panels, and tail pieces must be in place during competition.

32.   There must be a metal firewall between driver and engine compartment.  The minimum specifications are steel (24 gauge) or aluminum (.0624 thickness).

33.   All cars must have legible numbers in color contrasting to the background on both sides of the top wing, rear tail piece, and on the nose wing. Minimum height of the numbers on the nose is 8".  Minimum height on the tails and wings are 10". Car numbers are to be separated from advertising so that they will stand out and are readable.

34.   Top wing may be no more than 12’ square and a maximum of a 52" side panel.  Top wings are mandatory to enter a night’s event, but may finish without one if no replacement is available.

35.   Nose wings are allowed and cannot exceed 18” x 24” and must carry car number as described above in #34.

Protest and Claims Procedures

There will be a $1,200.00 “A” Main claim on the first three finishers by the 10th finisher forward. If your motor is claimed, you will retain the:

·            complete exhaust system including the exhaust nuts,

·            carburetors and/or fuel injection (EFI and/or mechanical) and air cleaners,

·            oil pan (if aftermarket),

·            coils and spark plug wires,

·            CDI (black box),

·            voltage regulator,

·            wiring down to where it plugs into the motor or into the connectors coming from the motor,

·            shift lever,

·            carburetor adaptors and boots,

·            chain drive sprocket and bolt, plus all of the plates, bolts, etc. required to mount the motor.

The person claiming the motor receives the:

·         motor with all stock covers (no aftermarket covers). If no stock cover available, will receive motor without cover,

·         oil pan (except if its oil pan is aftermarket),

·         starter,

·         charging system,

·         water neck, and

·         head and valve cover intact.

Claims procedures are as follows:

1.       No checks. All payments for protest or claims must be cash, cashier check, or money order.

2.       Must be made within 30 minutes of completion of the feature or “A” main.

3.       Will be taken on a 1st received basis by the President or Vice-President for that night’s event.

4.       Top 3 cars to report to tech area immediately after completion of feature, checkered flag has been waved. If any of the top 3 cars do not show up for tech, they will automatically be disqualified for the night.

5.       Determination of claims opportunity is based on the placed finished in the feature not final results at the end of the night. Any car or driver disqualified in the top three will not prevent the 4th to 10th finishers to claim.

6.       Refusal by car owner/driver to a claim will result in automatic suspension from all BMSA events for one calendar year, however, that car is still subject to tech.

7.       Claimed items will be taken at the end of the night of claim at a designated area by the Board of Directors. The exception will be on the 2-night races, and then the claimed item will be taken at the end of the second night. For claims on the first night of racing, all claimed items will be marked. In the event a motor is claimed on the first night of racing and the motor is damaged during the second event all funds will be returned to claimer.

8.       Each BMSA current year registered driver (must be a member) may claim only one motor per year. Driver must have raced three consecutive previous races with BMSA before claim is allowed.

*****All motors are subject to tech BEFORE any claim is allowed. If a motor is found to be illegal during this time, the claiming party will be returned all monies related to the claim, and will not be allowed to receive the claimed item.*****
